Wonderfully written book, but at times I felt the story wandered a bit too much. It was so sad but so honest. It was a groundbreaking novel for its time, and the poetic writing style was amazing.
I liked it! But, and I don't say it often, I thinked I liked the movie better. Wonderful example of an adaptation that might not be literal but really gets the vibe the book is going for.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a novel such as this one. One that follows the monotonous day-to-day of someone, alone mostly with their thoughts. But I think I enjoyed this so much because this is how I’ve been feeling as of late. You get up in the morning, sometimes with difficulty, get ready as best you can to fool everyone around you you’re put together, endure the drive to work, endure the work day, the drive home, maybe you eat dinner maybe you don’t, you cling to any ounce of freedom you can find, inevitably and begrudgingly go to sleep and do it all again. George is a complicated man, made even more complicated by the era Isherwood was writing in. I don’t think there is a prophetic takeaway from this book on what to do in the wake of the death of a partner, but instead a sympathy given to those who do need to carry on. Because after all, life can be a chore.
