I really wanted to read this after watching the movie but my progress has been soooooo slow bc every single time I started reading it I fell asleep within like 2-3 pages … so at this point I am giving up. I really tried though!

Beautifully written, but the plot left a lot to be desired. Characters for me fell flat.

It's so beautiful. I cried.

+ despite its brevity, this book conveys so much and made me feel so much in such a short space of time

+ its focus on the inner dialogues of a single character, displaying both the relatable and absurd thoughts that occur, makes him feel real. my heart !

+ the themes of loneliness and grief are dealt with so well, let alone the existentialism that sometimes accompanies them

i only wish it was longer!

A day in the life of George, an English professor in suburban California, dealing (or not dealing) with the death of his partner, Jim. Published in 1964, it's set just after the Cuban Missile Crisis. It's a fairly short book but not a word is wasted. I'll be thinking about this for a while and will be seeking out the film version with Colin Firth.

This book has not aged well.

"If I'd been the one the truck hit, he says to himself, as he enters the kitchen, Jim would be right here, this very evening, walking through this doorway, carrying these two glasses. Things are as simple as that."

Rip Jane Austen you would've loved Christopher Isherwood's writing style
