A book I'd like to sit with and maybe come back to. Isherwood's portrayal of George's grief and how it informs his everyday life is moving and genuinely haunting. His overthinking how he presents himself to the world is something I connected very deeply with.

Isherwood also uses the book to meditate on the role of experience and the Past (capital P) in all of our lives, with different characters representing different points of view more explicitly throughout the book. The last third or so, as George gets drunk, becomes more and more explicit on this theme.

What an absolute waste of time. A pretentious, lengthy rant that fails to have any depth or meaning with insufferable characters. The writing is good and there are some beautiful passages about life but they are lost due to how poorly the story has been constructed and how difficult it is to care about any of the characters at all. George has officially entered my nightmare blunt rotation.

This classic book was a little slow paced in the beginning, but brilliant in its thoroughness. We are given every train of thought, tangent, feeling, and memory that George experiences, and this is truly a stunningly realistic and thought-provoking little story.
