I hate to say it but i kept on thinking that it was a sub-par "Douglas Adams" effort. Maybe it was the effect of collaboration. I enjoyed it (hence the 3 stars) but perhaps Neil Gaiman was still finding his voice and rhythm as I really enjoy his later work.

I listened to the cast recorded audiobook, it was enjoyable. Neil Gaiman’s writing style isn’t really my favorite so I found some parts of the book a bit tedious, but I’m excited to watch the TV show now that I’ve listened to it, and I think the book is worth the read.

After watching the show I knew I needed to read the book. Normally I’m not a fan of watching the media before reading the book but this one was actually pretty consistent (makes sense since Neil Gaiman did both) and it was nice to have a picture of the characters already in my head. As someone with religious trauma, I love any story that pokes fun at religion or imagines it in a new way, and this one is one of the greats.

I want to get the word out to anyone who hasn't read this book: READ IT NOW! If you live in the Los Angeles area, I even have several nicely worn copies that I could lend you. I'm adamant about this because Good Omens is not only one of the funniest books I have ever read, it's one of the most meaningful, because it says something about humanity that I really, really want to believe. Also, Crowley and Aziraphale rock my world.
Have I mentioned that you should READ IT NOW?
Update, June 30, 2023:
The above is apparently from August 16, 2016, which is possibly the last time I read this book? I no longer live in Los Angeles, and I no longer have several nice copies to lend folks -- because I have repeatedly given my copies away and not had them returned. (Aziraphale would know better.) But I still love this book.

Listened to this over many card rides with JW, and we both chuckled and laughed throughout. I think the format and context of where we were made it hard to follow some of the sharp-turn tangents, so I feel like I missed some of the depth and need to square away time to read more fully again someday. For the parts I truly was focused, this was so incredibly clever.
