The frankness of the writing tone was refreshing and new. I really felt like you got to know all the less characters and understand the family dynamics. A little slow and heavy but one I’ll still be thinking about for a while after reading.

The first 20% had promise. The dark humor, the sarcasm. It went downhill as soon as Phoebe met the bride. I rage finished this book because everything after this point annoyed me (half a star extra because I finished the book, at 2x speed to get it over with faster).

The conversations about nothing went on forever. The spoiled bride's immaturity. How the author didn't seem to know how to write about an 11 year old. Phoebe's depression magically disappearing in two days. Phoebe becoming everyone's therapist. PHOEBE LUSTING AFTER THE GROOM when her ex husband cheated on her and sent her further into self-harm spiral. Her Ex returning as the perfect husband she wanted, sleeping with him, then ending it happily? Wtf? Oh, and her therapist should be fired.

And this is so minor in the entire scheme of ThingsThatAnnoyedMe™ but... "Pawtucket has no more socks”. Did she mean SOX, as in the PawSox? The town was home to the minor league farm team for the Red Sox who moved to Worcester in 2020. I have no idea if the author was attempting to make this a little Easter egg for Rhode Islanders or if she misread her notes from whenever she researched towns “near” Newport.
