🌊 The Wedding People by Alison Espach 🌊

MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

On a sunny day in Newport, Phoebe arrives alone at the Cornwall Inn, mistaken for a wedding guest.
She came dreaming of a getaway with her husband—now gone—but soon, she and the bride form an unexpected bond amid the celebrations.

I was so excited to read this and it did not disappoint. The writing was incredible, and though this was largely character focused, I really enjoyed the plots and how the story moved along. There were so many moments about feeling tenderness for yourself and just experiencing emotions and life that made this book feel so human. While it was tender and emotional, it was also hilarious and relatable and hopeful. I adored this and highly recommend it, and I can’t wait to read this authors other books!

Read this if you like:
  • beautiful writing
  • personal growth
  • explorations of human struggle and emotion
  • tenderness

The writing about the wedding is very intense.
Maybe due to the fact that no one in the party is in love. So everything feels like a play and people are just playing their roles in the wedding. Even Phoebe slips into the role of being maid of honor which feels weird because her first act in the book was to be herself. Honest. She choose to kill herself but when that didn’t pan out. She then choose to slip into maid of honor. So I can understand where her leaving the hotel is strange because she’s no longer playing a role. She now has to be herself.
However, Phoebes presence adds a layer of comedy and honesty which puts people at ease. Im excited for her adventure after the wedding.

I'm not sure if it was the hype or the fact this is a genre I wasn't expecting but I didn't enjoy this as much as I was hoping. The start is slow and quite depressing. And there's a lot of annoying/unlikable characters. I didn't like the turn this took with
the romance
for Phoebe.
But the book does get you thinking about lots of stuff, including how people pleasing can make your life smaller. I do think this would make a good TV adaptation.

I have not laughed out loud while reading a book in a long time. This was witty and reflective. It handled so much difficult subject matter with a fuck ton of grace and love. A perfect little summer read.

I was really drawn in by the setup, a woman checks into a wedding hotel without a clear reason why, and everything feels just a little off in an intriguing way. The writing is beautiful and dreamlike, and I appreciated how it explored grief and isolation. But as much as I loved the atmosphere, the story started to lose me a bit in the middle. It moved slowly, and I found myself wishing for more direction or payoff. By the end, I wasn’t totally sure what it was all leading to. That said, I think the emotional themes were strong, and I liked how different it felt. Just not quite the five-star read I was hoping for.

A cute summer book. Predictable, but fun to read.

THIS BOOK IS AWFUL. Not funny whatsoever - don’t let anyone lie to you. Every character is insufferable and the plot is so flat.
