The first thing I will say is OMG please check the content warnings because the first 50 pages of this, nearly in entirety, are BRUTAL. There are very sad, hard and raw emotions of the main character, and a lot of situations are completely lined with despair. I was NOT prepared and it took me about 5 business days to recover and read on.
After that, it was sort of impossible to not love Phoebe, and, therefore, not to feel defensive and protective of her, to not feel everything she felt along with her. I felt it all, I saw it all. The story is incredibly interesting and surprisingly full of twists for a general fiction novel. The unpredictability of it felt correct, considering the central meditation of the story is about life being uncontrollable, much to the average human's dismay. Simultaneously though, the story's build-up works a lot of hope through it, which was held in especially sharp contrast to the beginning of the story feeling so dark and full of despair. The work with the tone evolution was very impressive actually. 
Altogether, there is a lot to unpack in this story, but the throughline is clear: love wholly, and be weird. Gotta love it when that is the takeaway.

I started reading this book thinking geeze this is already so dark and I ended it with a new outlook on life. I seriously have never laughed so hard as I did during the great car sex debacle. Oh my Lord, I had tears streaming down my face! Fantastic read that will make you really think about how you're living your life. Are you fake and trying to please everyone just to skate by, or are you your true, honest self? Really enjoyed it!

I’ll start with saying that I really wish this book came with a trigger warning or that the description mentioned the suicidal ideation that was the main theme through the first three chapter of the book and continued as a thread throughout the rest of the book. Once that became more of a secondary theme I really enjoyed the story and the progression of the characters. The storyline could so easily have been simply cliche, but the author did a great job of pulling out the nuance in their lives and personalities.

I loved this book. It’s so easy to walk alongside Phoebe on her journey. It’s very affirming to anyone who has felt lonely, stuck, or like they’re going through the motions of life. I think the author should write a sequel!
