Omg I was so afraid of this book being a letdown. The cover of the book definitely matches the vibe of the book. It feels like a modern day retelling of early 1900s book. Loved every second of it. Dark humor throughout, but doesn't ruin the beautiful setting. Cant say much without spoilers, but it's up there for my favorite of the year.

TW miscarriage.

I picked this one up to read on a recent vacation, because it seems like people are always reading stuff like this on vacation, so I thought I'd give it a go. Also, location is Newport, RI, which is a very summer kind of place.

A woman checks into a hotel to escape her life (career, ended marriage, etc., etc.) only to find she is the only one at the hotel not related to a 6 day long wedding extravaganza. She meets the bride and other members of the bridal party and various antics ensue, issues get worked out, and new relationships are formed.

I went through this one very quickly, thanks to a flight and recovering from a vacation-induced (,yes, again, Dawn,) cold. And I have to say I liked it. Between liked and really liked, hence the 0.5 star. I really enjoyed the character development and how the various interpersonal relationships were explored. All kinds of familial stuff comes out at weddings, especially a six day affair, especially when everyone is staying in the same hotel.

It wasn't as funny as the book jacket implied. I chuckled here and there, but I wouldn't say it was "hilarious." Amusing at times with decent banter.

Would recommend.

The Wedding People by Alison Espach is a really eclectic and touching read. I had an initial reaction similar to that of reading Anxious People by Fredrik Backman: the first bit is challenging but the payoff of sticking with it is wonderful.

The Wedding People celebrates its characters in a unique way. When initially introduced, most of the characters are unsympathetic and the reader is encouraged to quickly judge their behaviors as reflective of their true selves. However, as the story continues, each character is revealed more fully. Each revelation creates space for really thinking about why we decide who other people are without seeking to understand first - and why we decide who we are in superficial ways and so often on our worst days.

The book ends on a positive, uplifting note without any bows or ribbons. The reader is encouraged to imagine what comes next for the characters as the novel ends, and that encouragement led me to end the book feeling particularly hopeful. I will miss these characters, and I am happy to imagine the full lives they continue to lead outside of these pages.

Wonderful.

This book epitomizes “don’t judge a book by its cover.” It expertly combined humor and depth, and the unexpectedness of it all made it feel so real. Lean in to the discomfort, it’s worth it.
