DID NOT FINISH

To be honest this book just wasn’t what I expected. I like to go into books blind sometimes and based on the title and cover I was expecting a fun rom com. This just was not that. It jumps off with very heavy themes, granted it is given in a humorous way. It also read a little too much like lit fic and just wasn’t what I was looking for right now.

I truly do not understand the hype about this book. It took me forever to finish and it started off so strong and then lost momentum. Would not recommend.

The Wedding People is, in a word, perfection. It is an instant classic offering up life lessons with humor and wit. Phoebe is a wonderful protagonist, so honest and funny and real. And she is far from being a perfect character, for the beginning part of the novel she is suicidal and contemplates this often (but this shouldn't deter you from reading this unless that is a triggering topic for you). All of the characters felt so real with their own issues and struggles, the banter between them was extremely real; everything about this novel felt so natural and I loved it. I never once got bored, and if anything I wish there was more (Apparently six days was not nearly enough for this wedding!). I would even love to read more about other characters that were introduced here: all of the supporting characters could have novels of their own.

I knew from about halfway through this novel that this would most likely be a 5/5 for me, and I love it when I'm right. I have over 50 photos of quotes I loved from this novel, from the trivial (coconut pillows anyone?) to the more serious questions and issues that just come with living life. It's simple perfection, and as a divorced woman maybe I resonated with this novel more than it would with others, but The Wedding People is a novel that should be required reading for all young adults, especially women. How to love and be in love, not just with a partner but to love and be honest with yourself, to acknowledge that maybe the easiest path isn't always the best, and what true friendship and partnership should look like.

I don’t do well with characters that are helpless/hopeless/insecure for no good reason. There is a way to write about a character with severe depression, but still make the story engaging & the character likable. This book missed on all of those accounts.
