I picked this one up to read on a recent vacation, because it seems like people are always reading stuff like this on vacation, so I thought I'd give it a go. Also, location is Newport, RI, which is a very summer kind of place.

A woman checks into a hotel to escape her life (career, ended marriage, etc., etc.) only to find she is the only one at the hotel not related to a 6 day long wedding extravaganza. She meets the bride and other members of the bridal party and various antics ensue, issues get worked out, and new relationships are formed.

I went through this one very quickly, thanks to a flight and recovering from a vacation-induced (,yes, again, Dawn,) cold. And I have to say I liked it. Between liked and really liked, hence the 0.5 star. I really enjoyed the character development and how the various interpersonal relationships were explored. All kinds of familial stuff comes out at weddings, especially a six day affair, especially when everyone is staying in the same hotel.

It wasn't as funny as the book jacket implied. I chuckled here and there, but I wouldn't say it was "hilarious." Amusing at times with decent banter.

Would recommend.

Books in this style/genre are generally not my cup of tea, but reading this in the midst of recovering from a breakup kept it at 3 stars. The message that it is enough to be here, to stay here, that there are paths forward even if they seem impossible beyond all visibility, makes it a healing read even if your experience is not a 1:1 comparison.

I do agree with other readers that the protagonist's suicidal ideation can come across as a plot device, so the premise itself is a bit crude. Crude is a common theme throughout the book in one way or another, but it does feel in character for the universe and its inhabitants. I almost DNF-ed, but once I decided to meet the premise/characters where they were, I was able to push through. If you have also recently lost a dear relationship, then you may find the book uncomfortable in other ways—in the sense of difficult yet necessary truths. If you are ready, push through, hold yourself, and allow yourself to consider thoughts you hadn't dared look in the eye.

Surprisingly substantive "rom-com" about a severely depressed woman who by a fluke books a room in a luxury resort hotel where every other guest is there for an elaborate wedding. Phoebe's life hasn't turned out how she imagined. At 40, her job is going nowhere, her husband has left her, and her cat just died. Getting caught up in a group of strangers celebrating a million dollar wedding is the last thing she wants, but it might be just what she needs. I like how author Alison Espach tackles some very sensitive and serious subjects (infertility, depression, infidelity, death of a spouse/parent/pet) but still manages to balance it all with a sense of humor. Dark comedies about broken people who let the light shine through their cracks - people who find hope in the midst of pain - these are my kinds of stories.
