This wasn't what I was expecting, but in a good way. I seem to be on a kick lately of books that start off sounding like a Hallmark movie..."so and so's life has fallen apart and so..." but Phoebe is written in such a real and vulnerable way that this novel feels authentic and relatable instead of fluff.

I loved this book so incredibly much — one of my favorites in recent memory, perhaps ever. So unusual and funny, so tender and raw in turns. Among other things, this book has one of the most remarkable and accurate descriptions of deep depression — of its confusions and fogs and million small losses — and, too, of the odd and inexplicable moments when it lifts. This book is so precious and rare — I will be thinking about its people, their amazing and poetic arcs, their interactions and humor and love, for a long time. I love, I love. Read!! I can’t wait to go back and read Alison Espach’s backlist. Just so wonderful and special.
