I always enjoy a historical fiction novel about a time and a place that I was previously unfamiliar with, so this gave me a chance to learn a lot about the Chilean Civil War. There was a lot devoted to how people’s sense of adventure and desire to explore is shattered by events like war, but also about the healing that can be found by moving away from built-up civilization and back into nature. Allende didn’t hold back from showing the ways human greed and hunger for power and status upsets our morals and can make truly good things like love and principle seem wrong.
