adventurous challenging dark fast-paced

The series is almost over. The story is amazing, if sometimes complicated. I will definitely take the time to reread these books in the future.

Things are getting complicated. Can Light actually pull it all off? Can't wait to find out!

This is my least favourite volume of the series. It's good, sure. But
Spoilerwithout L it's just not the same.

This volume was particularly slow, but it was more intense than the previous ones, in my opinion. Light is put, or I guess has put himself, in a situation where he is once again under observation, but instead of playing the perfect student and helpful son, he plays both L and Kira... undercover. Light has absolutely no support system (even though he technically has a lot of supporters); Near has cleverly made it so that everyone around him suspects him. I'm very curious to see what Light plans to do next.

While the plot and the Death Note rules have gotten incredibly intricate and complicated, I think the author has missed/skimmed over quite a few things.
Spoiler For example, does no one find it suspicious that Light doesn't properly mourn for his father? Where the heck is his family (mom and sister)? Did Light (and everyone else!) simply forget about Misa? Like, what the heck! She has sacrificed so much and she's being cheated on. I don't even care if her relationship with Light was never "real"; that is just plain disrespectful.
By skimming over some details, I think the author missed a lot of opportunities to build Light's character. Like, the dude hasn't changed much in the past few books. Additionally, the misogyny in this one was a bit much. That about Light definitely hasn't changed. Not a fan, to say the least.

I'm still trying to warm up to the new characters, and Near is quite adorable (Mello, not so much), but nothing can fill the OG L void. I think the "new" Kira/Mikami has introduced an interesting dilemma in which Light can be seen as the lesser evil, which brings back some of the spice that was in the first two volumes. Other than that, there's not much that kept me interested in this volume.

Brilliant as always, but the complete lack of character depth with ANY female character was more striking in these volumes than ever before. I really wasn't sure how to rate it because the plot was still so good after all, even though it's not quite the same as it was with the real L.

It was a little lagging in the middle (volume 9 in the original manga volumes) but it picked up at the end. I can't believe I'm almost done with the series!
