The first in the 5-book series about the Cazelets — a wealthy, sprawling family navigating a pre-World War II summer. The shifts in narration across the entire family, servants, friends are graceful and easy; like waves replacing each other on the shore, their narratives and voices are entirely unique but of the same body. Each character is specifically drawn— their hopes, foibles, and manners of moving through the world entirely engrossing. This is a gentle book, a portrait of life going on despite the times; a contradictory sense of safety in the face of chaos pervades. Passions and pain and joys are sublimely evoked through Howard’s calm, precise, beautiful prose. It reminds me a bit of LM Montegomery, but with more perspectives and less earnestness. Loved it, tore through it, look forward to the next four.

Appena terminata la lettura del primo libro dell’anno. Come hanno già sottolineato in molti, concordo che in effetti sia a tratti piuttosto prolisso. Ciononostante me lo sono goduto molto. Non posso dire che mi ha entusiasmato, ma è stato molto piacevole e in alcuni passaggi mi ha colpito e commosso. Tre stelle e mezzo in realtà
