A great read. A bit rambling but very enjoyable. I will dip into the next one of the series at some point in 2022.
Should’ve checked the trigger warnings for this one. Absolutely do not like

after loving The Priory by Dorothy Whipple, I needed to read another cosy classic and this was also set in the inter-war period.
This was a really lovely, wholesome and low stakes family saga set in 1937-8. I had tried to read this before but couldn't get into it, but knew I would love it in a different mood. I'm so glad I saved it for the right time as I absolutely loved it!
I really want to thank @laurenandthebooks for putting this series on my radar, I know I'm going to love reading the rest of the chronicles.
I normally read for plot but instead you get a fascinating insight into the characters and all their suppressed thoughts. Elizabeth Howard writes children with such wit and warmth, some of their inner monologues were hilarious. I got so invested and I'm really looking forward to following the characters throughout the series. The characters were so realistic in their flaws, hopes and dreams, I'm hooked! I especially loved the unexpected lesbian love story too đź’—
It's an idyllic novel set in the build up to war, yes it's full of privileged people but it's like Downton Abbey without Mary and Edith bickering.
Honestly I highly recommend this cosy family saga and to read it in the summer!

Picked this up in one of those free neighbourhood library thingies on a bright sunny day, as a kind of beach (but then balcony) read, but I realised that there's so many other books I'm actually looking forward to that this just isn't really worth the time so I brought it back

Started out as a rich tapestry of characters but quickly turned threadbare and insubstantial. Emotionally flat. Background and inner thoughts of peripheral characters that are never woven in, so they are only a presence with no storyline of their own. So many potentially interesting storylines that just sort of peter out. It wasn’t satisfying but by that point I didn’t really care. Still, overall I didn’t hate it. And, set in 1938, I did like the underlying WWII: will it happen or won’t it aspect of their daily lives.
