Engrossing family saga, with well-drawn settings and fully-realized characters. Miss Milliment is my favorite.
Historical fiction at its most immersive; Britain on the cusp of WWII. This first book of a five-book series sets the scene, introduces a huge cast of characters, and plants seeds and tiny explosive devices that will, no doubt, grow and flower and/or blow up in subsequent books.
The Cazalets are a sprawling family-system gravitating around the Surrey family home. We follow several of the characters as they travel between London and Surrey and with different children and adult points of view as the events of the late 1930s catch up with a way of life. Getting my head round all the different family members took awhile and I was grateful for the family tree at the beginning as the narrative does jump around different people a lot. It is a very interesting portrait of life at that time.
