The book we’ve been waiting for about 20 years. Excellent writing and plot. It was so great to learn more about Padmé’s early years in the Senate and her relationships with her handmaidens. This book added so much more to the lush lore of the SW universe, particularly my favorite planet, Naboo!

When I originally picked up this book I thought it was a retelling of the Phantom Menace from Padmé's perspective. However, I quickly learned that it actually tells the story of Padmé and her Handmaidens following Padmé's rule as Naboo's Queen. I really enjoyed the political aspects of this book and I loved learning more about Star Wars through this political element. I also really loved learning all about the Handmaidens and their purpose as well as the reasoning for the Queen of Naboo's big head-peices and dresses. Padmé is one of my favorite characters, so learning more about her and her motives was very interesting to me.

I wanted to like this so much, but there’s a reason this book took me SO LONG to finish. To be blunt, I found it quite boring, and it reminded me of Episode I in that way because they both have similar issues where they prioritize scenes of policy-making and meetings over intrigue and action. I’m so bummed because I love Padmé, and I was so excited to read a series dedicated to her, but I will be ending my journey with these books here. I gave this two stars for the beautiful cover art and for the barest glimpses of a more exciting story that I wish had been told instead.

One of the most popular aspects of the Phantom Menace in book form! Senatorial debates, political intrigue, and committee alliances. I jest, but it was actually a decent story, really fleshed out the relationship between Padme and her handmaidens, added some fun details to the original prequel.

I enjoyed the book and the insight into Padme’s time in the senate. I found it especially interesting as a fan of Clone Wars to finally get the background on Rush Clovis of the Banking Clan. Very interesting.

Padme was always one of my favorite characters so I loved seeing more from her and her handmaidens. This book does focus more on politics instead of action which makes sense for her character.
