I loved this book! It gave a great insight into Padmé's character. I also loved all of the politics and the Senate, and learning more about Bail and Breha. Not much happened, but it was a really good slice of life in the Star Wars Universe. Also I loved Sabé being bi! Another queer win for Star Wars; thank you E K Johnston

There is very little conflict until the last part of the book, and before then it's a lot of social calls. This also is relying heavily on fan service, and while I understand this is basically the nature of the beast, and I do enjoy the lore, I ultimately wanted a stronger storyline
The epilogue also felt like it came out of left field from the rest of the story

This developed Padme’s character quite a bit and added some lore for her in-between TPM and AOTC with connections to the clone wars series. However, it didn’t really have a plot at all, no conflict or any major climax. It had way too many characters and way too many names that ended in -é. The Sabé heterosexual romance was so weird when it was clear she was in love with padme. The audiobook was good, with all of its background music and folly.
E.K. Johnston is my favorite “new” author in the Star Wars franchise for her ability to evoke the feel of Star Wars and deliver powerful character-driven stories featuring strong female characters. Though this book started a bit slow, it was a great tale of Padmé Amidala’s transition from queen to galactic senator - a worthy story that adds depth to a character that was underserved in the films. Additionally, once it gets going in chapter 2-3, the story feels as fast-paced as any Star Wars adventure, while being mostly a tale of political intrigue. It expands the genre's bounds and tells a SW story from a different perspective (similar to the Rouge One prequel, Catalyst). Her development of the various handmaidens and other senators was also exemplary, I hope that she writes a Mon Mothma book someday...another hugely important character that has always been relegated to the background. Additionally, I loved the implications of Palpatine's manipulations - Johnston does a great job of establishing how deep and long a game the future Emperor was playing. His manipulation of the government never seemed so real to me as it did in this book.
