Beautiful Losers reads as an attempt to intermingle the purity and beauty of mysticism, extravagant eroticism(!), and the seriousness of scripture. It's a bit absurd and it's a bit genius, but I've leant toward the latter. Not wholly, as my mind is still blurred by the reading experience, but whether the book's content be by design or formed by a stream of youthful consciousness ("more of a sunstroke than a book"), it proves a fascinating insight into Leonard Cohen's mind prior to the beginning of a more refined songbook. Introduced to me by white chords. Truly grateful.

Conflicted feelings about this book. Didn’t necessarily like the majority of it but it will always mean something to me.

A vulgar, racist creep of a book. The prose veers between hypnotically gorgeous and laughably incoherent. How much sense could this novel possibly make to someone who has no knowledge of Montreal/Quebec culture and history? If this was all I'd ever read from Cohen, I would loathe him.

i think this takes the cake for the weirdest and most disturbing book i’ve ever read, which is saying quite a bit.
to sum it up: if someone tells you they found this book interesting, that’s fine, but if they tell you they loved it, run

It's smut. At least two-third of it. But it is beautifully written. And SPOILERS: (probably) Hitler and (probably) Nietzsche had BDSM sex in it.

3 stars. I have absolutely no idea what to make of this, but it was a trip.
