I really don’t love or read self help or similar type books, but I can’t deny learning a ton from this book. I feel like we could all spend a lifetime improving ourselves through the skills and concepts explained here. I recognized countless instances where I had either felt terrible with certain people or felt strong connections with others and was given a vocabulary and education on how and why I felt the way I did in those circumstances. Along with tools for how to identify those feelings when they come up, avoid shamers in my life, and build stronger bonds with supporters.

I'd read a chapter a month, so I can remember what really stuck in my mind. The concept that practicing empathy builds resilience to shame is something I'll remember the rest of my life. We're often told that instead of feeling sorry for ourselves to get out there and help others, and you may have heard the phrase "to mourn with those that mourn". I have a deeper understanding why that works, and what happens when we don't. This is a valuable book for learning how to make the best of who we are, and is for all women because everyone experiences shame.

I wanted to resonate with this book. I did learn some things, apply some of the knowledge, and I think I gained overall. Maybe I am just not ready for it yet?
Will probably re-read in the future.

I found the book easy to follow, and it had good advice in it. Then it lost steam for me the last two-thirds of the book.
