Alongside Defoe's A Journal of the Plague Year, easily one of the most underread books in literary history. Everyone reads Defoe's Robinson Crusoe just as everyone reads Shelley's Frankenstein. Perhaps one of the most bizarre apocalyptic novels that contextualizes our modern obsession with apocalpyse, natural disaster, global epidemic, and the fall of social order. A must-read.

I’m a bit late with this review so here it goes.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED Frankenstein and so I started reading more of Shelley (and also her mom’s as well). When I started listening to the audiobook of The Last Man, I forgot to notice how long it was and also I went through a lot of trauma during this time so I kind of put off reading for almost a whole year

well, it was in three volumes, of which i would rate the first volume a 1, the second a solid 4 and the third a 3 or 4 or 5, depending on the chapter. in the second volume i was thinking "thank god, the plague has arrived, and thank goodness perdita has been killed off.
some of the language was so beautifully poetic i didn't mind at all the long rambliness of it. but sometimes the most interesting stuff was completely glossed over with sentences like ... i will not go into detail but with perseverance we managed to gain entry into ... etc. etc. (that's a paraphrase/example)
i wanted more HOW and less WHAT
technology / sci-fi wise i was ok with the fact that they seemed not so advanced. 1818 was not so different from 1717 or 1616 or 1515... overall, technology and science moved slower back then.
overall it took sooooooo long to read!

Very interesting both in its own right and in the way it captures a moment in time / Mary Shelley’s own turmoil in the wake of her loved ones’ passing. It is, however, kind of boring.
