This was a dark psychological and political fantasy which faces some very deep themes head-on. If you appreciate character-focused fantasy that isn’t afraid to tackle things like  mental illness, trauma, political ideologies and power then you should definitely pick this one up. My only critique is that I would have liked more page time and depth given to the female characters, but hopefully that will be addressed in the sequels.

I think this is the first review of this book on Storygraph so I feel a lot of pressure lol... I’m not the best at writing reviews!

This is a fabulous book - the world and magic system are well developed and interesting, the plot is suspenseful and unpredictable, but for me the characters are the strongest part of the novel. Even relatively minor characters are vivid and well fleshed out, and almost all of them provoked strong feelings from me. I also always appreciate a LGBT protagonist. Definitely pick this up if you’re interested in a book that combines fantasy/horror/political intrigue to great effect.
