So good and then so underwhelming. I love Ali Hazelwood and this book started off so incredible. It seems like she forgot this was a "novella" and rushed the last 1/3 of the book. The change from enemies to lovers was a whiplash and the spicy scene was kind of out of nowhere. And then it just ends. Theres a one-page prologue where the MCs just go grocery shopping.....Unsatisfying

I’m totally reading these novellas out of order. I started with [b:Below Zero|59651553|Below Zero (The STEMinist Novellas, #3)|Ali Hazelwood|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1637311357l/59651553._SY75_.jpg|93935903] which gave me high hopes for this story because the sparks were flying for Hannah & Ian, but I wasn’t as invested as I thought I’d be. Maybe it’s the roommate-forced proximity trope that turns me off, but I did not pick up on the chemistry between Mara & Liam in the slightest. This book was quick, easy to digest, and overall fine, however, I did not find myself cheesin’ like I thought I would.

If this book was longer I prolly wouldn't have even wanted to finish it. Yeah, this was disappointing.

Tbh I wasn't rlly a big fan from the start bc both characters were giving me the ick, like when Liam was lowkey trying to butt into her personal business by saying he could "talk" to someone at her job for her (she barely even knows u why r u butting into her personal life? I guess this was meant to be a sweet kind of moment but it wasn't rlly to me tbh...) & even Mara was annoying me even more, like when she basically ordered him to move out of the house they're sharing that HE lived in first, was petty for no valid reason and caused him to lose important work docs, acted like he wasn't Helena's nephew and tried to bring the "it was Helena's house" argument, etc. I was also not so into the writing, there were tons of cringey/awkward phrases/parts like "asswipiest asswipes," & "“Some good old reciprocal proxy bullying? Mutual warn-off? Leave-My-Friend-Alone Sixty-Nine?” Just... why? What did these add to the book? It really could have done without. A lot of the dialogue was off putting to me. In addition, I didn't like how it just felt like Mara was only into him at first solely/mostly just from looks. Okay, we get it. You think he's hot. You're thirsting, we know lol. I saw a review from user Layla that said "half of this book basically just consisted of the main character telling us how tall and big the love interest is," and I 100% agree. I kept feeling that Mara was only really interested in him based on appearance alone when she barely knew the guy. Turn off! That's not romance, not love.

Later when they really began spending more time together and growing comfortable around each other my opinion on where the story was going changed and I thought to myself that I liked that they were growing more comfortable around each other and getting to know each other. That would have raised my rating here by a star because their interactions genuinely got cute and sweeter & their dynamic became more likable to me.

Then that all changed towards the end of the novel. First of all, that was a pretty predictable climax of the book. Second of all, that smut scene was god awful. The sex felt super coerced and "borderline consensual" as user Emma has already said in her review (I agree girl). It was unprotected sex (just why). Instead of making me feel giddy w excitement I j stared at the words I was reading w a disgusted expression on my face! Love that.

Then the book ended not long after the smut LMAO like wth? First book by ali hazelwood and i gotta say i'm far from impressed.
