Wow. Heartbreaking, devastating, and cruel, this fire destroyed Hinckley, MN, and surrounding areas in 1894. This well-written book, by the author of The Boys in the Boat, includes a personal connection to the author's family. I've been to the Hinckley Fire Museum, but should return after knowing more about this event and understanding especially the heroes of the fire. Definitely recommended. Audiobook narration is excellent except for mispronunciation of Mankato.

The history, science and personal stories combined with the fact that this took place in my home state made this my hands-down favorite nonfiction read in a long, long time.

This type of book is what turns a lover of fiction to nonfiction :-)

Why has no one made a movie about this?

I would have to agree, with some of the other reviewers of this book, that this is a straight up horror story. In almost an instant, the lives of everybody who lived in Hinckley that day were forever changed. I can't imagine what I'd do if I came out of my house and there was suddenly a wall of flames at my door, and not just in one direction, but seemingly all around you. Daniel Brown has a personal interest writing this book, since his great grandfather died in the blaze, but he weaves an extraordinary narrative of people facing one of the worst fires of that era. Recommended.

A gripping read about fires that razed towns in Minnesota during the summer of 1894. Brown's descriptions of the fires put the reader right in their path. He also provides scientific explanations of the science behind the growth of the fires and the progression of the injuries of the victims.

Adult. High School.
