Note:  I am writing this review taking into account the whole series, because the nature of manga is that a single volume is usually not a standalone.  I will, however, keep this review relatively free of spoilers.

Fruits Basket is one of the great stories of our time, in my opinion; while its opening premise is lighthearted and maybe even a little cheesy, its overall arc and theming is digging at the deep stuff.  It's digging at trauma, and the way it isolates us from those around us; it's digging at connection, at love, and the way we heal others by offering them our love.  It's about family - those we're born to, and those we choose - and about how the kindness of one individual can ripple out from them, how the people they help can help them in return, or go on to help others, how kindness is a generative act.

It's a beautiful story full of beautiful, flawed characters who learn to accept and love one another not in spite of those flaws, but because of them, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everybody and anybody.
