Paranormal mystery with horror? IDK but I enjoyed this WAY more than I thought I would (Horror is not my genre at all). I was all in on Lin Qiushi and Ruan Nanzhu from the very beginning and thankfully the story grew on me as well. I think the humor was the perfect balance for the amount of gore in this novel (a lot in the first two doors and then it tones down some). I was not scared at all but I was definitely grossed out by some of the descriptions (easy to skim if you can’t handle that).
I adored the side characters/found family but the best thing IMO about this novel was the sweet, tender, and funny interactions between the LQ and RN despite the horror of the world they live in. The shameless flirting RN did, the innocence of LQ and the naps/snuggling/sleeping together were my favorite parts. As expected there is a lot of death including some characters you love in this novel and plenty of TW you might want to check. I read this for a genre change and because I heard the main couple’s relationship was top tier and I have no regrets!
If horror/paranormal/supernatural was my normal genre, I think I would give this 5 stars, but I only give 5 stars to books I will definitely reread. I don’t think I will reread BUT Rosmei is supposedly going to publish this in English and I will definitely be buying them if they do :)
Also, the ending and the extras

I finished this whole book and I liked the whole book when I was reading it but after I got done with it and like after a few weeks and I was like just reminiscing about the book and just actually thinking about it, oh my God, I actually hate this book so much. I have no idea how I read it. I don’t know why I read it in the people who say that’s five stars and that everybody should read it and that’s the best book they ever ever read they are freaking liars because I know they’re lying and I hate it so much. I actually hate this book is so much OK and I’ll give you a few reasons too so the first reason is that I didn’t even really see this as a romance that much like OK I had some had some romance in it And it was like you could tell that I guess it was based on romance, but seriously they had like zero interactions with each other and if the interactions were there, they literally got cut short because they’re literally in a horror game and they’re about to die every two seconds so WTF that’s not gonna work and then the other reason is that the ending like oh my God, oh my God it’s it’s a plot twist. It’s definitely a plot twist and it’s something else but what the freak oh my God OK so the ending is this is definitely ending, but the ending is where the guy the main lead he isn’t actually a person and he is literally part of the game like he’s the 12th door. He’s the last enemy that you have to beat to get your wish or whatever but he came alive because the main character he liked the main character so much and he wanted him so bad that he came alive and he literally experienced his whole life again like well not his whole life but the whole life ever since the first door. He literally experienced that all Again With the main lead, and like the main lead, took the main characters position in life and then after he came out the door, he literally didn’t remember anything but the life that he just saw in the door so he’s like oh yeah you’re actually you’re the leader of this group. No, the main lead was, but since the main lead overwrite his memory , oh my God, then he was that it was so freaking annoying. I mean, he ended up coming out of the door anyways and we met him. I don’t know how but we did but seriously that this is the most annoying book ever. It’s so freaking annoying. I just like the whole thing. It’s definitely a good book if it was not Romance I mean you should definitely know that there’s little interaction between the two and it’s sort of slow paste, 100% slow paste oh and it’s definitely just not romance. I would like this if I was not looking for romance because I mean it has everything. It’s really funny and stuff but oh my God no I hate it. I hate it so much

DNfed on chapter 35. Around 24%.
This is painful tbh...
This is the first Danmei I'm DNFing and it sucks.
This book was supposed to have everything i liked. Danmei? Yes! OP main characters? Double yes! horror, gore, and body horror? Hell yes to all!! I was sooo excited to read this, and i became even more excited when i realized that The ML was supposed to be a crossdresser. Like are you kidding me?? I'm gonna devour that shit! Or so i thought.
Tbh I can't even exactly pinpoint what I don't like about this...i just couldn't continue. I'm starting to get depressed and I've checked how much i got left of the book an unhealthy amount of times. If i continued like this, i knew I'll just ruin my good streak of reading since the year started.
Let's start from the charecters: I thought I'd have a field day with this couple of OP smart mfs who go through so much shit and still come out on top. But i think that's the problem...these guys always have the whole thing figured out. Specifically the ML. Like dear god, this is what? Their 4th door together now?? And every single time it's ML figuring everything out and putting everything together, finding the key and the door like it's easy cake and before anyone can even think about it. It was cool on the first and second door but then it just got repetitive and annoying. Like chill bro?? Let the others do shit too, damn. I thought this book was gonna have THE EARTH IS ONLINE, which it did. However the difference between the two is that the other didn't have the ML always solving shit while our MC just stood around and took all the flirting thrown his way. like give me some action! Kill people we care about, fuck up the main characters or at least make us care enough about the side charecters so that we can actually feel bad when they die. Ughhh I'm so frustrated!!!
The MC tbh was the only one worth the read ,i like him, he's funny, stupid at times and just overall a chill guy with crazy love for cats. I feel repented, thank you.
The other charecters can be a cut outs of cardboard boxes tbh. They're so bland and uninteresting i wanted them dead just so we can have less scenes in the book. The only person worth it was the kid that had a twin. He went with them to the forth door, can't remember his name to save my life but he's cute, funny and so stupid, and terrified of his own shadow. love him so much.
Next is the story i guess: tbh I thought the doors were interesting enough. They had enough horror, ghost and weird shit happening that i was kept entertained all this time. Sadly even that couldn't keep me from dropping it eventually.
One thing that irked me tho was the was the charecters acted around rookies??. Like bro so not cool. Like i get it, they can be annoying and their questions are always repetitive And can come off as stupid to others, but like seriously?? Ignoring them and not even trying to explain and help them? Yikes. I felt so bad for them, and yes, even when they were acting crazy. Like imagine you're just minding your business walking down a road or coming out of your apartment and you suddenly find yourself in place like the world of the doors?? I'd lose my shit too tf. Mfs acting so high and mighty instead of just simply explaining the situation to people whom you know will die if you don't step in? That such a low move I can't even Begin to express how i hated ML and his other lackeys every time they acted like such assholes to rookies.
Now to the relationships: honestly, the only thing i ship is Cat X Mc because that's the only thing worth it. This book barely has any relationships to speak of other then the main couple, and tbh as much as ML annoyed me at times, i still found him extremely entertaining when he was flirting with the MC. Bro was so straight to the point it amazing to witness lmao.
Anyways sucks that i had to DNF something i was so excited to read, i hope I'll come back to this one day and give it another shot.

Short review
Amazing, highly recommend. Please read content warnings before reading. The book is so wonderfully written, their relationships + the horror ?? But there is a happy ending!!
A I love this book review with spoilers
I was feeling a bit hesitant to start this since this would be my first actual horror danmei, and there’s no regrets 🫡 This is written so wonderfully?? The horror was actually scaring me, had to make sure I read in the corner of the room so I had a view of the whole room 😭
Every single arc/door had me sitting on the edge of the cliff because I was so invested in what was going to happen. Every character is also so lovable, how they all interacted was so precious. This is a perfect example of a found family dynamic. The author also had a wonderful way to twist in comedic undertones while is plot was heavy, and this makes it easier to process without sinking too deeply.
The relationship between RNZ and LQS is so sweet, so cute my gosh. & all of RNZ attempts at flirting failing because LQS was so oblivious to it. Their interactions before they’re even together?? The cuddling while in the doors? The protectiveness and trust they have for each other- so beautiful. Also the crossdressing was so cute and silly, their interactions while crossdressing was also so funny. Reading others reactions had me laughing so much too + the fact that LQS loved both versions of RNZ, and he had to constantly reassure RNZ that he’s into both versions lmao.
This book is called Kaleidoscope of Death and it’s something you can’t ignore… There was aboutthree to four major deaths , that completely broke me. I was sobbing so badly for their deaths too, I had to take a few breaks since reading how they all handled their deaths was too much. The author wrote their grief so beautifully bc damn… I do love how there is a bittersweet ending for them though. I’m glad that they’re alive in a way, and that they’ll be happy in the end. Even if it’s in another world, they’ll be with those they love.

This book is called Kaleidoscope of Death and it’s something you can’t ignore… There was about
Graphic: Body horror, Child death, Death, Mental illness, Violence, Blood, Grief, Cannibalism, Medical trauma, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Confinement, Fire/Fire injury
There’s a lot of content warnings… I may have forgotten some things or included some other things bc there’s so much and I don’t remember 😭
