Far from my favorite Isabel Allende. Emilia is not an especially compelling main character—she breaks social norms, but are her core she’s just good, good, good. There’s no nuance to her, no secret hidden corners. Nothing she did surprised me too much, except for her decision to go literally be part of a war, which was just plain stupid. I didn’t even feel bad for her after, nobody made her get involved in all that. Her trauma was entirely self-inflicted.
Also, her romance with Eric Whelan came out of absolutely nowhere and felt totally tacked on and random. And it wasn’t necessary! You literally could have cut it out of the story and it would’ve basically felt the same.
I also agree with others that the novel felt quite slow. Everything was telling rather than showing. We were very rarely in scene.
All in all, this is missing the magic touch of Isabel Allende for me.

I've seen many of the author's books floating around but this is the first I've picked up.
This book has a little bit of everything: family, adventure, trauma, romance, and self-discovery. It's a beautiful story that, at its heart, should inspire some self-reflection and unapologetic self-acceptance, in the spirit of our protagonist. Emilia takes each moment of her life in stride and I can only aspire to do the same. Though the conclusion felt a little unbelievable... I still enjoyed it for what it was and found it to be satisfying.
I look forward to reading more of this author's work and would highly recommend this book to just about anyone. In our current political climate, I think many would find Emilia's perseverance inspiring.
