This was a really disappointing read for me! I’ve really enjoyed Isabel Allende’s books in the past, and I was excited to see this come out. I thought the history was quite interesting but most everything else fell flat for me. I didn’t really care for Emelia— I liked the idea of who she was and the concept of her journey, but when we got to the end and she was in jail and beaten and almost killed I wasn’t moved at all??? I said oh? Hm! Eric and their love story felt so out of place and unnecessary. I did enjoy some of the side characters, including Angelita and Rufina, but I didn’t really care about most of them!!
