ap season reading slump strikes again!

in a different mood, i probably would have finished this. as it stands, the girls have absolutely despised each other for about three chapters too long with no signs of abatement- by the halfway point, one would assume there’d be a little progress, and i’m irritated by the stalemate. there could be a genuinely good book waiting and I don’t have the patience to find it. oh

I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. I selected the book on NetGalley because I liked the cover and thought the description sounded vaguely interesting, but it defied my expectations by quite a lot.

It’s read through three different persepectives. K.J., Becka and Grampa Eli (through his letters). I liked getting to know the two girls properly, I think if it were single perspective I would have struggled to like the other character, which is quite good writing because it shows how much they despised each other, especially at the beginning. Grampa Eli was just the cutest with his love for his family and his passion for his bugs.

Some of the things he had them do sounded terrifying. Going down the Grand Cannon on mules, no thank you, I was with Becka on that one. And the hiking sounded exhausting. But Key West Florida sounded absolutely stunning and so much fun, if it’s actually like that, I’d love to go there someday.

The big twist in the middle wasn’t a surprise, I guessed it probably a hundred pages in. In saying that, I still think it was a decent twist and it helped move the plot along without being forced.

The ending wasn’t revolutionary or even that fresh, but it was nice and it worked for the story that was told. Not everything was magically solved within their family, but you can see the very beginnings of the puzzle pieces being put together. If you want a fun story about reconnecting family, this is the book for you. I loved it and definitely recommend.

*I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

So this has actually been on my TBR for a record-breaking 3 months-ish (better than the one that has been collecting dust for years). Anyway, I read this in like a day and it was quick-paced and a calm breeze. This felt like a less dramatic version of The Inheritance Games, lmao.

I loved the plot so much! The family drama added with death, made for an interesting setup. 4 stars for weaving an intricate plot while still maintaining its surface-level simplicity. To me, however, the plot big plot twist was a little predictable once we figured out what the huge family drama was, so that lowered my rating. The plot really exemplified the message that sometimes shared by another person isn't because of personal experience, but from what others have said and influenced you on. The plot unfolded properly, giving just the right amount of exposition while showing us the slow mend of the girls. Although the situation was a big one, the stakes were relatively low, which made this an easy read.

I love how we instantly got glimpses into Becka and KJ's life, giving us the character exposition, while the story still moved forward. Their polar opposite dynamic was funny and insightful and contrasted with their unique life experiences. Though the story was fast-paced, the character development was neatly unfolded and I could see the girls blossoming into newer versions of themselves.

Read this book if you like: Family drama, summer reads, mystery puzzles, and polar opposites.

Anyway gotta blast,

- Yejide
