3 // i really wanted to like this :( but honestly it just fell flat in most aspects. the plot wasn't engaging, the romance felt a bit half-arsed and i honestly would have preferred the book without it, and the writing felt as though it wanted to be slow and descriptive for sake of depicting a lush atmosphere but failed, in turn leaving prose a bit cloying and drudging to get through.

this was fine. but i have a feeling that ava reid's adult works will be more up my alley as i do believe her chosen subjects and writing have potential to be very good.

hence le trois etoiles...

This book was incredible on so many levels. First of all, the imagery that it used and the atmosphere that it created was insanely palpable. I don’t think any other book I’ve ever read has been so immersive in that aspect. And then there’s the language: the motifs (i.e. drowning), the poetic prose, the allusions to literature that was literally written just for this book! I also found the characters to be complex in a way that made them endearing by and real.
My only two complaints would be 1) the lack of world-building (I need a prequel just on the Drowning) and 2) the predictability of the twist (I guessed it about 100 pages before the reveal).
This book made me feel like a dark academia schoolgirl trudging through a dreary European town. Also, I am now more in touch with my feminine rage. Men suck.
This book reminds me of Ariadne and Elektra by Jennifer Saint and the song Cassandra by Taylor Swift.

There is no doubt Ava Reid has a unique writing style. I’m not so sure this story was her best execution. It was very predictable, and I’m not sure translates well to audiobook. I was very confused as to what was happening and why for the first 35% of this book. I liked Juniper and Thorn better.

This book was nothing like I expected. There is SO MUCH going on here. It’s a romance but also not. It’s a spooky gothic fantasy fairytale but also not. The themes it explores has me absolutely floored.

Here’s what to expect:
