This book has an undercurrent of darkness/uneasiness and it is really interesting to see the effects of that on the characters and their ability to overcome that through the story. The world building is quite good for a book of this size, but it flowed well with the story, it wasn’t just thrown at you. It also analyses sexism in academia, which is still prevalent in modern society. Effy (the female main character), has so much growth and shifts the power imbalance of her society.

Very academia vibes, I enjoyed this! More magical realism than fantasy imo. Definitely a recurring SA & anxiety theme so be ready for that but it was handled well and is very real and fits with how everything unfolds. MCs are precious.

I really appreciated all the water metaphors when tackling trauma and mental illness in the book. I once told my brother than getting on antidepressants was like coming up for air after being submerged and Ava Reid totally captured that and then some.Misogyny, sexism in academia, survivor guilt, sexual assault, plagiarism, so much was tackled in this book. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
