this book is written for teenagers on tumblr in 2014 and i can say this because i was one. the plot is an afterthought to the pretty prose written by the author. truly every line is trying to be "quotable." by the time i realized i didn't care to finish this story i was already so close to the end i thought i might as well get there but i wouldn't recommend this to any adult. there are also some points that i feel were handled irresponsibly when discussing mental illness.

Make sure you have tissues and read the warnings, but this is a pretty good debut! Neo has my soul and I loved Sonny so much! Also Eric is such a mood.
I will say that the ending felt long winded and some of the dialog was idealic/unnatural especially in the last quarter of the book. But the way the author doesn't shy away from the harsh subjects she tackles in the book really makes up for!

I can’t say I enjoyed this book, but I am glad I read it. It was inspiring, while also being dark and heavy.
Really, if ‘Hetero’ is ‘everyone’s gay and no one dies’, then ‘I fell in love with hope’ is ‘everyone’s gay and everyone dies.’ It has inspired characters in my own works. It was metaphor heavy, and I could tell the author is young (though that is a neutral comment). There are parts I wished were omitted just to remove the slight bias the white author has in imagining Hope/Sam. They were intended to be written race-less and gender-less, but details suggest otherwise.

I did cry though.
