I got the book because of the Netflix doc which I thought was interesting but the tools in the book were too mystical for me.

I do think these tools are valid interventions and I am enjoying practicing them. But, as others have stated, the spiritual aspect to the book is a no-go for me.

The best kind of self help book - one you can use immediately.

Cut to the chase....that's what the Tools do. Rather than searching endlessly for the why's of why we do what we do, behavior modification techniques (the tools) are taught to change problem habits. Visualization and exercises to break out of your comfort zone, letting go in order to move forward, overcoming shyness and insecurity and developing an attitude of gratefulness. They're general issues that most everyone can relate to. I find myself visualizing the simple stick drawing illustrations throughout the book almost daily, so that in itself, made it a worthwhile, though not life-changing, read for me.

If you've done any real work on yourself either through CBT or 12 Step or really any program for improvement, I don't think any of this is going to be any major revelation for you. That said,I got enough real actionable tools and frank honesty about what it takes to really make progress in life to make it worth the $8 download.

I heard Dr. Stutz on Marc Maron's show and really liked his frankness and tough love attitude, unfortunately I think this is a book mostly by Dr. Michels with Dr. Stutz sorta reluctantly dragging behind for the ride, so the book isn't the reflection of Stutz that I was hoping for. I do think this book would be a good companion to group therapy work and I am in favor of people actually *doing* rather than *talking* which is such a big part of so many therapies, so there's that. I have already recommended this book to someone I know who isn't much for conventional therapy or 12 step and would do so in future since certain people are more into the idea of "self" help than sharing their issues, but this book is not the first suggestion I'd give anyone.

Also the illustrations are super embarrassing considering this is a book by a major press.
