When I'd read about 40 pages, I was wondering whether I'd enjoy this book. Two alternating voices, one of a mid-50s woman who manages an apartment building for rich families, one disaffected 12 year old living in one of those rich families, both of whom revel in and hide their intelligence and education, both of whom are isolated, both of who discuss all of their interactions with everyone else from a highly misanthropic viewpoint. On top of this, the concierge, early on, expounds on one school of philosophy, and I don't read philosophy or about philosophy with any pleasure.

But things move, perspectives change, blooms blossom.

There are quite a few great observations about human connection, beautifully put.

So, it grew on me.

This one took me a little time to get into it. I almost put it down and gave up, but I'm glad I didn't. It was quite enjoyable.

I say once again that Goodreads needs a 10-star system. This is really a 7 out of 10, or a 3.5 out of 5.

The first half of the book was boring and weird, and I only kept going because my son said that it's gets better. The second half of the book was a whole lot better.
