This is why I love books... I had no idea the Radium Girls even existed, let alone their contributions to science and safe working conditions in the United States. This narrative non-fiction book was a great balance of science, history, and story-telling. I appreciated the structure and text features used by Kate Moore. Definitely recommending to students!
4/5⭐️I read this book for my literature class and I actually really liked it! I usually don’t read historical nonfiction/biographies, but this was really good. A saddening but amazing story of injustice and bias:) those girls were so strong<3

The story of the “Radium Girls” is heartbreaking, infuriating, and ultimately a case of tenacity and strength in fighting for truth. Horrible, careless working conditions with a known carcinogen; combined with greedy and selfish companies lead to a disaster of health maladies.

Note: reviewed by a 28 yr old with a biology degree. A story about disgusting corporate greed and some very brave and persistent women. Excellent and devastating book, written in mostly simple terms but not so simple that I didn’t enjoy it. I would’ve loved it as a ‘young reader’ but it may be too much for sensitive readers. Would have loved more detail in places so I’m going to read the original version and compare. 4 stars because I sometimes got confused with the characters, locations, and times so maybe it could’ve been structured differently.

This book was a fantastic read. I had learned about the Radium Girls when I was in high school but haven’t read much about them since. My librarian gave me this book to read and I’m so glad she recommended it. The story shows how important these teenagers/early 20 year women were so vital to the WWI effort by painting the radium based paint onto watch dials. But what made me angry is that so many men knew this stuff was dangerous but never told the girls it was dangerous. These poor girls, being healthy women then becoming sicker and dying for no apparent reason. I was moved by their bravery as they stood up and demanded justice for them and their families. Highly recommend this story!!
