I love a good story and good writing, this delivers both which is rare in my opinion. It’s much easier to find a good story teller than a good writer. This author’s writing style makes me feel. There’s such a building tense unease. A sinister air to the words. I had to pause about halfway through and just soak it in because I was enjoying it so much I didn’t want to rush, I wanted to bask in it a bit.
I work at an assisted living and have worked in memory cares as well. I thought it was an interesting way of exploring things that you’ll see in communities. Getting a possible inside perspective. I love a good unreliable narrator, I love not knowing if the horrors are real or imagined.

I will read anything they write. Adore it.

A book I found on accident, I very much enjoyed this book. I was drawn in by the non-traditional protagonist- you don’t usually see horror stories with an elderly woman as the protagonist. I wasn’t let down by the story itself: it is an empathetic, engrossing read that manages to avoid the pitfalls that other horror falls into when dealing with age. The horror of this book isn’t being old, instead it’s a dark story about loss of agency and isolation.

Read a proof version of the story, so the finished product may be different. Was engrossed by it, though. Liked it well enough. Was thrown by a few spelling/grammar errors--not sure if part of the plot/story/intentional or not.

This was a quick read for me, driven by desire to know the ending. The story was just abstract enough to keep me guessing, which I liked.  When an author can keep me guessing, without alienating me with indecipherable metaphor it is a win.

The connection to nature was a pleasant surprise, and I found myself actually learning some fun stuff about trees and other plant species.

Definitely wouldn’t recommend this one for folks who struggle with dementia or themes of depersonalization.

I don't know exactly what to make of this book, but that's a good thing. I'm still processing it. What I will say is that as soon as I had a good understanding of what the book was about, I knew how personal it would be for me and I wondered how personal it must have been for Reid when writing it. I haven't read the 2 memoirs, but I was aware of the author's past as a caretaker for his grandma. I have questions, but that's pretty standard after a Reid novel. Safe to say I'm ready for book #4.
