It is nice to read a new standalone translation by a Syrian-French woman of this early 18th century French fairy tale that may or may not have been taken/inspired by a visiting Syrian. The story, along with Ali Baba, was added by him to the Arabian Nights and passed off as part of the original. It is nowhere nearly as good as the multilayered stories within stories within stories of the Arabian Nights and not nearly as stranger or wonderful. But is still an enjoyable read. And, it goes without saying, better than the Disney version. But much better to read [b:The Arabian Nights: Alf Laylah Wa-Laylah|474170|The Arabian Nights Alf Laylah Wa-Laylah|Anonymous|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1238355961s/474170.jpg|859375] in the Husain Haddawy translation.

Só conhecia a história da Disney de Jasmine e Aladim, depois dessa história contada por Shérazade, gostaria de ler o livro mil e uma noites! A história de Aladim, sua mãe, o mago e a princesa Badr, me fascinou muito.

I loved the translation and the simple, elegant typeset and cover art. I think my favorite part was actually the introduction, where the translator shared the history of this story and it's various iterations. After reading and seeing so many other versions, it was really revealing and interesting to rad a translation of the original.

A brilliant translation, if disheartening in its portrayal of the Maghreb.

This was a good quick read, though it took me a month... You don’t need to be familiar with any of the retelling to enjoy it, in fact it would be better without Disney in my head. There is an interesting intro that tells some background on the story and its history.
