There's a sense of hopeless despair and rage that dug into me while reading, making me rather uncomfortable. That is the point of this novel, of course, and a sign of good writing. Combined with some of the darker elements and the treatment of women, however, I didn't really enjoy the read.

Raw. Unadulterated. Himes takes his reader on a rollercoaster ride that starts with a slow climb and ends by dumping his reader into a glass box of frayed nerves and wrecked emotions. A story that stays with you. An experience that changes perception and forces you into deep introspection.
