Published in 1963 and noted by critics as the beginning of the Latin American Boom, The Time of the Hero is the first novel by Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa.

Set in a military school, this novel explores the harsh, violent, authoritarian and dehumanizing world of military education, and the ways in which said training ends up affecting the personality and emotional state of the students.

The author covers topics such as abuse, injustice, friendship, loyalty, hypocrisy, corruption, sexuality, class difference, racism, among others. I particularly highlight the exploration of racial prejudice in such an honest way, since this alarming reality is still present throughout Latin America.

The author's ability to bring the characters to life is remarkable. They and their experiences are unforgettable to me, sometimes because of their rawness and other times because of the pity they inspire. I managed to connect and empathize with them despite their many negative qualities.

The non-linear structure, the changes in narrator and focus, stream of consciousness, among other resources (certainly innovative at that time), make this novel a very exciting and challenging read.

This brilliant novel is not only a criticism of the systematic abuse and double standards and hypocrisy of the military school, but it is also a direct attack on the concept of manliness; how men are socialized, what is expected of them—expectations that are always linked to violence and domination.
