I loved the first two chapters and then it was downhill from there and I admit I didn't finish. This book just felt like it was missing too much. It was trying too hard to be deep but the emotions felt stilted. There was also too many times where it didn't feel realistic enough and I had to suspend my disbelief too often. I think the biggest issue is the voice just wasn't working for me and that played into a lot of the above.
With that said if you like survival stories and enjoy this author's voice, this book could be worth giving a chance.

I read this book a little ago so I won’t go into as much detail here, but overall an easy, enjoyable enough read!
The book didn’t drag at all for me, and I found it a light, pleasant read. I thought the main character was intriguing, and there was a nice variety in the other characters’ personalities.
I was excited for a YA, book version of the show ‘Lost’ or something similar to Lord of the Flies, and while I thought the read was nice enough, I was a bit underwhelmed.
It was still gripping enough to keep me turning the pages, and I did find some of the characters interesting—I just wish there had been a bit more depth to them. I think there was good potential there for some interesting character dynamics, and overall I would have love to know and connect with the characters more.
I may have to have a reread at some point and edit this review with more detail, but I’d recommend checking this book out if you’re interested!

This book was a lot of things- interesting, typical, frustrating, addicting, anticlimactic. I had good and okayish times with this book. I mean, in reality this book doesn’t really distinguish itself from other “lost in the wilderness” “Lord of the Flies” type books, but for some reason it still ended up being fun and somewhat thrilling to read. I really liked the dynamics of the group and the ways friendship and differing personalities were explored. I wanted Joel to kick bricks. I wanted something BIG to happen at the end and I didn’t get that. But I do think it was a nice change of pace for me— I’ve been reading mostly Adult Thrillers, so it was fun to get back into YA through an Adventure book.

Very good! Read art the suggestion of a student.
Clearly influenced by books like Lord of the Flies (but really, is that only read in AP English?), Alive with maybe some Damselfly or Gone thrown in but not as good as Beauty Queens. Still, Tom's relationships with his classmates is worth reading the entire book despite the plot's predictability.

Despite one section of the book that I think went off the rails, this book was fantastic! Tense but believable, scary yet not terrifying. It was smart, and it was compelling. I really look forward to recommending this to my students!
