“I'm still agnostic. But in the words of Elton Richards, I'm now a reverant agnostic. Which isn't an oxymoron, I swear. I now believe that whether or not there's a God, there is such a thing as sacredness. Life is sacred. The Sabbath can be a sacred day. Prayer can be a sacred ritual. There is something transcendent, beyond the everyday. It's possible that humans created this sacredness ourselves, but that doesn't take away from its power or importance.”
“. . . my obsession with gratefulness. I can't stop. Just now, I press the elevator button and am thankful that it arrives quickly. I get onto the elevator and am thankful that the elevator cable didn't snap and plummet me to the basement. I go to the fifth floor and am thankful that I didn't have to stop on the second or third or fourth floor. I get out and am thankful that Julie left the door unlocked so I don't have to rummage for my King Kong key ring. I walk in, and am thnkful that Jasper is home and healthy and stuffing his face with pineapple wedges. And on and on. I'm actually muttering to myself, 'Thank you. . .thank you. . . thank you.' It's an odd way to live. But also kind of great and powerful. I've never before been so aware of the thousands of little good things, the thousands of things that go right every day.”

This one was pretty entertaining to read. This book, of course, follows the year long journey author A. J. Jacobs took to live biblically. I enjoyed reading about some of the ridiculous things he did (shout out to his wife, Julie, for putting up with his shenanigans for a whole year 😂). There were times where I actually laughed out loud, and I had such a fun time keeping my husband updated about what was happening in the book. I also appreciated the amount of research the author did while going on his journey to follow the Bible literally. Jacobs had a new release this year about his time living constitutionally, so I’ll definitely have to borrow a copy of that one from my library!
Interesting - I kept wishing he'd delve deeper so I guess that means I enjoyed it!
So interesting and provides an entirely different perspective on religion, and what it means to follow the bible.
This led to some good insights about belief in the bible and the arguments people have over it.
I liked it. But I didn't love it. I guess I was just expecting more. But to be fair, this was a pretty ambitious quest and he did an admirable job. His self-deprecating humor is endearing and I enjoyed the insights he had. The bible/religion - it's just such a huge topic that influences so many areas of our lives and society... it sort of felt to me, like he just barely touched the tip of the iceberg.
Liked this book as much as the one written by Edward G. Dobson, the difference being that A. J. Jacobs is not a practicing Jew, nor a Christian. It was funny and engaging. He's done an interesting experiment indeed.
So funny and gives an interesting take on the laws of the bible.
