The plot was a bit less streamlined than book one, and went in a different direction than I anticipated. That said, this was a fun read overall.

This trilogy is exceeding my expectations. I'm not overly enamored with "complex magic system" fantasy, but I believe if you are going to go that route, you need to say it with your chest. Robert Jackson Bennett has taken that idea to its logical conclusion and has given us what is essentially a cyberpunk story in a high fantasy setting. Between the heists, corporate feuds, modified humans, and dangerous intellectual property, this is a refreshing and original blend of storytelling that has been a lot of fun to read.  In addition to creating a setting that has great personal appeal to me (I'm a software engineer in my personal life), he's also made room to tell a compelling story about human connection, morality, the will to power, and the ways in which humanity oppresses itself given the means. I've been really impressed with the first two books in this series, and I can't wait to see how it ends.

Gregor and Orso, my beloveds, were the absolute highlight of this for me! Explosive opening and ending, but I got really tired of how much of this was just conversations explaining intricately detailed things. It was just so breakneck the whole time but we also spent a lifetime just having conversations in a basement, somehow?? Still very interested in how this will all conclude but I do miss elements of the first book.
