"Hollow Oath" was a surprising, gripping morsel of a book. I didn't think I'd end up loving it this much, and I certainly didn't think I'd end up nursing what looks suspiciously like book-hangover after finishing this novella. But yeah, that's what happened and I'm so pleased.
This book is quickly devoured, and and the story is a mix of vivid, autunmnal atmospheres, very chilling, very creepy monstrous elements, a lovely and interesting small-town setting with a historical background featuring both Quakers AND pirates, and a surprisingly heartfelt, sweet romance that was both intense and intensely sexy.
I loved it. Like I said, the atmosphere was truly something special, as was the writing: I've only read (and loved) W.M. Fawkes' novels when they feature Sam Burns, so I'm now very, very curious to discover their intire backlog.
I also completely adored both leads, and I found their romance absolutely gorgeous. One-sided enemies-to-lovers, with pining and first times on side? Inject into my veins, PLEASE.
I absolutely adored how well both Ichabod and Brom fit together, even with their differences, their contrasting personalities and their hostile past, and how sweet and lovely they were together once Ichabod managed to get over the fact that he's actually deserving of love and happiness. So cute.
I loved how the author managed to weave the horror elements together with the romance, and I thought the historical setting just added to the whole atmosphere: "Hollow Oath" is the perfect Halloween read, but I'd recommend you read it at any time of the year. It was an unexpected gem of a book, and now I'm even more curious to read a few more of W.M. Fawkes' books.
