This is another book I find myself rereading at least once every year. That could just be because I am a video game fan, and this book is about a virtual reality video game, or just because it’s a damn good read.

Of course, it’s also one of those books that pulls off the stunt of “changing something” that’s always worked a certain way, but the way it was pulled off… you didn’t even know it was happening until the very end when they mentioned it.

The writing style is easy to understand, and flows beautifully. The descriptions allow one to imagine the landscape and people around you, but also leaves room for your own imagination to think up its own version. And although it’s a short book that can be devoured in a scant few hours, those few hours will not be wasted.

A truly sublime book, and I recommend it to any and all, not just the video game fans.

A wonderful mix of sci fi and fantasy! I read this as a kid over and over again because of how much fun I found the premise! A very relatable main character for how she deals with her situation.

Entering my reviews over from my old Goodreads profile I unearthed recently...here are some super sappy thoughts from 2009-era 14-year-old Claire!

This is a wonderfully imagined book, and I enjoyed it immensely.

it's a rare and good thing when a book makes you actually laugh out loud.
this books defied all expectations.
"Janine, come back to the house!" will haunt my nightmares.
giannine bellisario was such a witty 14-year-old. she has to experience the same video game over and over until she can break through and win the game. but when something damages the equipment in the real world, she has a real deadline.
the frustration is palpable as she is forced to restart the game over and over and... over.

This book sure was fun to read! A girl gets trapped in a virtual game and must win or she will die. This story was very original and the plot was interesting. However the writing style was not the best. The heroin had to try multiple times to beat the game and while she tried something different every time the constant reparation of words and actions got a little wearing. I still highly recommend this book as a fun read!
