Practical, Honest, and Unpretentious Advice
Early in On Writing, Stephen King promises to keep his advice short and to the point—cutting out all the bull—and in this, he absolutely succeeds. By teaching through example, he deftly walks readers through the essential skills every writer needs.
King is both realistic and encouraging, blending practical guidance with personal stories that are as honest as they are engaging. His no-nonsense approach and willingness to share his own journey make this part memoir, part masterclass—an inspiring read for writers at any stage.

The fact that I finished this in two days could speak for itself, I think. It was a really nice and quick read, and gave some context as to how some of King's novels came to be. There was some solid advice on writing, but it was mostly just nice look into King's own process. Not a masterpiece of a book, definitely a read I enjoyed a lot.

Part memoir, part craft book, King discusses his life and the practice of writing in a way that will have your highlighter sweeping across the lines every few pages.
Excellent book on the writing craft. I found it a pretty entertaining autobiography too.
Not what I was expecting but an interesting read with insights into King's creative process and lots of interesting personal/autobiographical tidbits. I found it hope inspiring on the topic of writing with his idea that ideas come from a mysterious place and our job as writers was just to channel them. Not sure I'll start writing immediately but who knows, maybe someday.

Simply brilliant. It's both a treatise on and meta-example of great writing, on top of the vehicle of introspective memoir. This is hard to do, and yet he makes it look and feel effortless. Even if you're not a writer, it's hard not to appreciate this book.
Somehow doesn’t feel outdated at all, and it was fun to get a glimpse behind the curtain of King’s process as well as hear about him tell stories about his own life — the guy truly is a master storyteller.
