A slightly generous 4 really. A decent book of anecdotes with some real insights. The opening chapters, where Kermode talks about how he fell in love with cinema as a child and eventually became a professional cine-obsessive, are the best bits. The encounter with Herzog is also great. in between it gets a bit patchy.

Took a little while to get into the book, but really enjoyed it once it got going. It is written in the same style as Kermode speaks, which may put people off, or, as was the case for me, made it feel like he was telling the story. If you are a fan of wittertainment then a must read.

Not bad, a bit like the radio show - lots of anecdotes told in a rambling style. Somehow not quite as satisfying. Maybe he needs another voice to keep bringing him back on track as with Simon Mayo on the radio.

The book written as a "based on true events" movie narrated by him would not really work for people who are not already fans of his work. But to those who like to follow his charades the book is pretty entertaining. Each chapter contains set up and description of a significant event in his life mostly related to how he got where he is in his career. There's tons of blabber between the actual content which is actually pretty fun too. There are a lot of running gags that can get old especially if you were looking for a regular memoir of sorts but I went into this book expecting exactly what it delivered and I would certainly recommend this.
