This book is character driven with a lot of long back stories and convoluted suburban drama. I think I would’ve liked it more if there had been more suspense, but I knew what was going to happen before it happened, which made the story a bit boring. I appreciated the themes of maternal love, plans vs passions, and race relations. But the book felt more like telling instead of showing, which wasn’t as engaging as it could have been.
Content: a few concerns to be aware of, but none explicit or graphic.

I went into this book thinking it would be more mysterious. Not a thriller per se but definitely thought it would be more of a mystery. This felt very character driven, but I struggled to see the development of the characters. This wasn’t a bad book, but due to the afore mentioned reasons,  it rated a little low for me.

i feel like if i enjoyed this genre i would’ve really loved this book, but unfortunately i’m just not if fan of contemporary fiction. that being said, the end had me hooked. i audiobooks this and i had to put it on 2x speed by the end to consume it as fast as my heart desired.

the ending left me kind of upset. i get the point of the book but still, i hate seeing characters i like not win in the end. will those two characters ever meet again? will the secret ever be revealed? i wish i could’ve read it instead of leaving it up to the imagination.

anyways, if you like this genre, definitely pick it up.

This book is a beautiful exploration of the American family, race, motherhood, and reproductive politics, while also being fun to read. I’ll be thinking about it for a long time.

This book proved itself both heartwarming and heartbreaking but thoroughly engrossing nonetheless this books explores the intersections of parenthood, coming of age, class, culture, and race in a profound and challenging manner.
