Black Widow does jobs to atone for her past, and things are often not what they seem. In this volume she struggles with the idea of home and making connections.
It's interesting and the art is gorgeous. It's mostly brief action-adventure tales a la James Bond - more combat, less actual espionage (she even makes reference to this in the voice over at one point). I'm curious to see how this goes on.

At times the story felt a little stilted and hard to follow for me, but for the most part I enjoyed it and look forward to reading Vol. 2 soon.
I subscribed to this title partly because it features a female protagonist, and partly because I felt like the Avengers movie was an inadequate introduction to Natalia Romanova.
I love the stories. I love the art. I think I'd need to go digging into other TPB series to get a full education in the character's origin, but I really enjoy the present day setting and Black Widow's exploits when she's not with the Avengers.

Three stars for the story, but the gorgeous art bumps it up to four.
Black Widow seriously needs her own movie. this book had action. and mystery and reality. loved it.
So this is what Black Widow's all about! Heh! I like it! Very much! I didn't expect to like Natasha all that much, but there's something about her cold, business-first attitude that I appreciate when she's on a job. She can do some pretty badass stuff.
Then when she has time to herself, that emotional distance she tries to keep from other people (and animals) tugs at my heart. There's a quiet loneliness to her personal life that she's convinced herself she's fine, and better off, with because of the type of occupation she has. It makes me want to hug her. There's a person with emotions in there, but she's careful to keep her walls up, for her own safety and the safety of those around her... Whimpery sigh.
Let's talk about the gorgeous artwork...

Ugh. I love it.
Enough said.
I didn't have any expectations going into this. Just a curiosity for the title character. Yeah, there's a whole redemption motive behind what she's doing, and we don't know what it's for, but I can roll with that. I really like this book. Natasha, as a character, doesn't feel like any of the other heroes I've read in comics. She's fascinating and sad, but tough and independent. She suits the name "Black Widow" perfectly.

The beautiful artwork is worth 10 stars. I'm in love with this style and hope to see many more comics with these colors and strokes.
The story is fine, not extremely exciting, but it's good. I do enjoy the fact that (spoiler!) Winter Soldier made an appearance *big grin!*
