This was an awesome read! It's fitting that the cover held a quote from David Gemmell, because that's who it reminded me of. And that's a good thing. Don't get me wrong, some parts were draggy and some bit were formulaic, but overall, this book rocked!

I'm all ready for the next one now. "Raven with me!"

An interesting enough read. However I'm not sure the story gripped me enough that I'd want to read next installments in the series

This seemed to be wrtten more as a juvenile novel that an adult fantasy book and that's who should read it. I won't be continuing the series!

This book is always on recommended lists when I search for something new, so I thought that I would give it a try - everything started with a rush and excitement and (there are NO spoilers ahead, so I will keep things vague) and it started to taper - things happened through out the story that kept me interested because of my curiosity, but in the end this does not land on the mark for me - I could not care about the characters because there was nothing to care about, and if there was something to attach to, it was taken away (several different moments of this) and I was left like I had just read a 500+ page novel and I am still hungry for something - but not this.

This one was one of the hardest to get in to as I have ever experienced. I put it down twice and didn't expect to go back to it. Perseverance paid off in the end and after about the first four chapters, wherein there is way too much written about ponytails, the story really takes off. It doesn't get really amazing until about the middle of the book but from there on it I couldn't put it down. I have read quite a few reviews on here where I can't bring myself to believe that the person who wrote them actually read through the whole book. It is worth pushing through the beginning and the slow but decent next few chapters to get to the meat of Barclay's writing. Once you get past what seems to be the mistakes of a beginning author you are rewarded with epic battles, well written fights and a decently thought out magic system. From about the middle on hints are dropped here and there eluding to more depth in the magic system that I hope will be explored in the next book in the series. In short it is not easy to get through the good parts but it is worth the journey.

James Barclay’s Dawnthief is the first book in the Chronicles of the Raven which, as it turns out, is the first of two trilogies featuring this band of mercenaries. The Raven, composed of six men plus one elf, are a hardened group of mercenaries renowned for their fighting ability and ability to succeed at the toughest missions. In Dawnthief, the Raven are quickly and almost accidentally drawn into a quest to recover the nigh-apocalyptic spell Dawnthief for the dark wizard Denser in order to stave assault from the ravenous and aggressive wesmen and their powerful magic overlords.

Bland and generic sword and sorcery. Not entirely sure if I can be bothered with the sequels...
