Cottagecore cozy fantasy at its peak
Kiela, contented librarian at the Great Library of Alyssium, is forced to escape from the ransacked city with her magical plant assistant Caz and a small collection of spellbooks. The only place that she can think of is her hometown and island of Caltrey, from where she and her parents left many years ago. Finding her old house still standing, Kiela starts to sort out her life with Caz’s help, and some of the illegal magic that she cobbles together from the spellbooks. Fortunately, or unfortunately, her handsome and capable neighbour Larran keeps helping out, even when Kiela hasn’t asked for help. Will Kiela be able to make a new life in her old world? Or will the turmoil in Alyssium catch up with her?

This is cottagecore cozy fantasy at its peak. The characters work, the setting is bucolic with a hint of threat, and the magic is suitably lovely. It’s about the main character’s gentle fitting-in to an established community and what she can bring to it, much like many a romance novel, so it delivers exactly what it says on the tin. I really enjoyed it and it has enough invention to satisfy a teen or new adult reader.
